Dr. Maria Palafox is a tenured, board-certified general surgeon trained in advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques.
She has extensive breast cancer surgery experience and is adroit with the latest advances in cancer genetic testing. She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge and went on to pursue both her residency in general surgery and a fellowship in critical care in San Antonio. She is committed to providing state of the art care that helps the patient heal and recover.
Dr. Palafox has a special interest in the surgical care of breast diseases with an emphasis on the comprehensive care of breast cancer patients in South San Antonio and South Texas. She is also committed to providing genetic counseling for hereditary cancer syndromes, especially for the Hispanic and African American community. She is a highly skilled breast cancer specialist committed to the pursuit of furthering advancements in breast health.
She was the first breast surgeon in the U.S. chosen to utilize CancerGene Connect, a patient-driven data collection platform for cancer genetics. It is now the platform used by Invitae as part of their genetic testing program. She also served as the liaison for the Committee on Cancer to the American College of Surgeons for Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas; a position which was instrumental in achieving NAPBC certification.
In addition, Dr. Palafox trained with Dr. Dixie Melillo, a pioneer in breast cancer care in Southeast Texas and the founder of The Rose. Dr. Palafox is a former Chief of Breast and General Surgery within the Tenet hospital network and is one of only a few South Texas surgeons to achieve Hidden Scar™ certification. Additionally, she was the principal site investigator for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Young and Strong study in conjunction with 25 other sites across the United States.
